The Benton County Archives is housed in the lower level of the library and has processed records dating back to the late 1700's. Volunteers and staff work to clean, document, and prepare records for long term storage, after each record is added to a computer database to make retrieval of information easier.
Coordinating with the genealogy department often visitors find copies of information about family members in the archives as they do family history research. Original records are stored nearby until they are processed into the humidity and temperature controlled environment where they are cataloged and shelved.
The county archivist is Mr. F.B. Cain and the county historian is Mrs. Virginia Whitworth. The archives is just one more reason to come visit the Benton County Library! Have questions? Call 731-584-0778 where our friendly staff will help you find the information you need.
Some of the records in the archives include:
Circuit Court
Chancery Court
General Sessions Court
Ledgers
Support your local archives as they take on the project of purchasing and installing compact shelving which will more than double the current storage area! Donations can be mailed to 121 South Forrest Avenue, Camden, TN 38320.
